Galway Cathedral
20 min walk from
The Periwinkle B&B (Bed & Breakfast accommodation, Galway City).
The Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and Saint Nicholas, (known locally as "The Cathedral!2) dominates
Galway’s skyline, it was opened in 1965 and is situated on the site of the formerCounty Jail, which was just a short convenient walk across
the Salmon Weir Bridge from the Courthouse! The jail, which was closed in 1939, was renowned for its cruel treatment of
prisoners. The Cathedral was opened and
dedicated in August 1965 by Cardinal Cushing of Boston, USA.
The Cathedral is the largest and most impressive building in
the city, and is said to be the last cut stone Cathedral built in Europe, It is built with cut limestone, is a
combination of classical and traditional design and has Connemara Marble
flooring. Most of the raw materials
used in the building were supplied from the local area and it is a fine example
of Irish workmanship. Inside the visitor
will find the cut stone, woodcarvings and wall paintings particularly impressive.
The style of the building is Hiberno-Romanesque with is unique eleventh century
native Irish mode that pre-dates the Norman invasion. It is actually built on one of the many islands in the city,
Nuns Island which has three bridges leading onto it.
